Bottle Gourd Kootu

South Indian Bottle Gourd (also called lauki or doodhi) Moon Dal lentil stew, which has a consistency of a curry, therefore can be a great accompaniment for the rice dishes. It is very simple and quick to make and it only requires two main ingredients.

Preparation time-5 min

Cooking time- 30 min


  • Pot for boiling
  • Pan for tempering


  • 3/4 cups of Moong Dal
  • 1 cubed Bottle Gourd
  • 1/4tsp Turmeric Powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Couple Curry Leaves

For tempering:

  • 1/2tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2tsp split Urad Dal
  • 1 Red Chilli
  • Pinch of Asafoetida
  • Couple Curry Leaves


  1. Add 1/4tsp of turmeric powder and 3/4 cups of moon dal to a pot, add water 2cm above the dal and cook until it is half cooked (dal starts to open)
  2. Peel the skin of a bottle gourd and chop it into small cubes
  3. Add bottle gourd cubes and curry leaves to moong dal and cook everything until the vegetable becomes transparent and dal is close to being mushy
  4. Heat up the pan and add 1/2tsp of mustard seeds and 1/2tsp of urad dal, asafoetida, remaining curry leaves and 1 red chilli. Fry until mustard seeds start to splutter and urad dal turns lightly brown
  5. Add the tempering and salt to the dal and stir
